Monkey be happy game12/26/2023 ![]() ![]() We didn't get a shot on target until the 89th minute today. Why sympathise? If grown adults don't understand the meaning of a friendly, I'd be more inclined to pity them. We were then absolutely destroyed in our opening SPL games. I can also remember watching a good performance in a pre-season match under Gary Locke (Brechin away maybe) and being excited about the season ahead. We then signed Eremenko and we had a great season. I went to Luton away under Mixu and that was a very underwhelming performance. I think we were pretty mediocre in the league cup games that year as well. I remember us being poor in pre-season during the Steve Clarke era. We can’t start the season with this level of negativity towards the players and manager, otherwise the atmosphere will become toxic very quickly. I get that for many people McInnes is in the last chance saloon, but being this angry over pre-season games is not a normal reaction. I saw us beating Falkirk 4-1 away during pre-season last year - it was completely irrelevant and nobody thought it meant we were going to have a brilliant season. Some against worse opponents than Linfield and it’s never had any bearing on how we perform once the season starts. However I’ve been at loads of pre-season friendlies over the years where we’ve been rotten. Last season’s away record is obviously a big factor in the reaction to today. I am gathering that we were desperately poor today and I sympathise with people who paid money to travel and watch that. This pretty much sums up how I’m feeling just now. I say that with optimism in the hope to try and bring some confidence to this forum. I think over the next few weeks we are gonna see the forming of a solid team. Would the scorelines have been different with these guys playing the friendlies. As i said in a previous post, im happy that the likes of Magennis, Wright, McKenzie and Vassell are resting up as we want to have them injury free for the start of the season. Unless im mistaken, the whole point of pre season is to try new things, work with new and existing players and see what might work or what doesn't. I think a lot of people were under the illusion it was gonna be a spectacle and because it wasnt, they are annoyed. ![]() To go on like this over a friendly when the team is just gelling together is nonsense. The thing is, nobody is saying they would accept poor performance when the real competitive games start. If folk are happy with that when our sesson starts on Saturday then more fool them. If the answer to what was missing is just is a bit more organisation and spirit then fair enough - but equally if thats all it is then the response still seems disproportionate to me And I'd expect them to learn the lessons of what didn't work.Īll of that seems absolutely run of the mill pre-season when you are mid building a squad. ![]() That's the sort of thing I'd expect them to try. Looks like we were trying the three at the back to see how Murray got on in that wing back role from the start and how the new defenders fared. I've never thought Cameron is good enough but he's getting given a chance which is fine. Literally the second game the defence have played together. I've no particular issue with anyone complaining about lack of signings, historic failings meaning we're in another rebuild, too many faces retained etc All reasonableīut given the players currently at our disposal, I'm genuinely struggling to see what was hoped for? Widely different formation ? Wales hat trick? Radical new style playing out from the back? Based on the players we currently have with us on that tour and are currently fit - what was it you expected to be different this week? That's the bit I'm struggling with the strength of feeling on ![]()
