Since the pressure distributes differently among the pins, it is not enough to pierce the balloon’s skin.ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. Lets say instead of 1 thumbstack if we arranged 20 pins – then the pressure of 1 pin is now distributed among the entire 20 so the single pins pressure is reduced by 20 times. ![]() In the second trial of the experiment, when the pins are grouped and arranged in a cluster form, the pressure distributes among all the pins and along the larger surface of the balloon skin. And the reason the inflated balloon pops out is more pressure concentrating on the smaller area over the balloon. When we used a single push pin, there is a lot of pressure on the balloon’s surface only at one point i.e., the point of contact between the balloon and the sharp end. The Science Behind the Balloon and Pin Experiment ![]() Were you surprised to see your inflated balloon stay still inflated even after contacting a group of sharp objects? Well, continue reading to learn the magical science behind this super cool and fun activity. Results: Observe the outcome of the activity! Does your inflated balloon pop out? If everything goes well, your inflated balloons will not pop out when brought over several pins. Again, make sure you are giving the same force that applied while experimenting with a single pushpin. Testing balloon with group of thumbtacks : In this step, pick another balloon and inflate it! Now bring the inflated balloon over the group of pushpins arrangement slowly and without disturbing the arrangement of push pins. Tip: Arrange the pins as close as possible to each other. ![]()

Weird medieval illuminations1/2/2024 ![]() ![]() Medieval people sure did love their snails! Here we have a snail with a human head. Stowe MS 17 f.8r | Source: The British Library ![]() Over all, he’s definitely one of the weirder images I’ve found so far.ģ. (At least they somewhat resemble bird feet!) Then of course, he’s holding a flower but his hands don’t seem to have fingers. That’s definitely an interesting and amusing style choice. (Look at that feather!) He has the body of a baby but has the head of a grown man. First off, he’s completely naked except for his rather fashionable hat. The longer you look at this little guy the more and more you find. This is another manuscript that’s absolutely filled with delightfully weird creatures. Here we have another grotesque from a later manuscript. Add MS 18852 f.87r | Source: The British Library While this image is certainly strange, it’s not the weirdest I’ve found.Ģ. The grotesque’s hood is definitely a very human element. (Though the artist definitely took some creative liberties by making those party’s green!) I’m not sure what kind of animal the red and white spotted body is from (if it’s from any animal at all!). My educated guess is that this creature is made up of an owl for the face/head and some kind of hoofed animal for the feet and tail. Personally, I like to try to figure out what kind of animals the artist took inspiration from when drawing their grotesques. The technical term for them is “grotesque.” Grotesques are often found in the margins. ![]() Medieval manuscripts are filled with little monsters that are combinations of animals and humans. Today I want to share with you some of these images so you too can have some of the delight I’ve had while finding these. During my searches, I’ve stumbled upon a lot of weird and strange things drawn in the margins. Since late June, I’ve been running an Instagram where I share images I’ve found in medieval manuscripts. Traditional hunting quiver1/2/2024 ![]() ![]() Field competition Archers wearing Easton field quivers Field Quivers For this reason, hip quivers are not as popular amongst the serious competitor.ĭespite a few small downfalls, hip quivers are an excellent choice for ease of use and arrow visibility. In certain indoor ranges where space is limited, or if an archer has particularly long arrows, hip quivers can be problematic for an archer and his or her neighbors on the shooting line. Cheaper models, made with low-end materials also tend to flap awkwardly on the legs, which can get rather uncomfortable. Between size and the arrow direction, they have a tendency to catch on other objects, and possibly other archers in the line. However, with the generous size, hip quivers tend to be more cumbersome. For people who may need to be out on the range for a long day, or need to have gear/tools on hand for themselves and others, a hip quiver has more space than a field quiver. Hip Quivers are also more generous with space, allowing the user to store more arrows and accessories. It also allows you to count how many arrows you have removed and shot from a particular tube, making it easier to know if you have fired the required amount of arrows for the end. For instance, if you are an archer who likes to shoot certain arrows because they give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, you can see which arrow you are grabbing. There are benefits of being able to easily see your arrows in the quiver. This allows an archer to see the arrows in front of them, making it easy to select one, remove it from the quiver and nock it. Arrows in the quiver are directed with the nock end pointing forward of the archer… For instance, if the archer is right-handed, the quiver would hang off of his or her right side, and the nocks would be visible to the archer as they sit in the quiver tube. To truly differentiate between the two, let’s start by talking about what a hip quiver is and then we’ll go into what makes a field quiver different An archer wears a left-handed hip quiver.Ī hip quiver attaches to a belt that hangs around the archer’s waist. Hip quivers and field quivers are both essentially hip worn quivers that sit on a waist belt. ![]() All of our links are posted at the bottom of this page.Hip Quivers and Field Quivers What’s the difference?Ī common question asked when archers are shopping for a wearable quiver – what is the difference between hip quivers and field quivers? The answer: not a whole lot – hence the reason for the confusion. Be sure to check out all our hunting films on YouTube and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Compare heights of people virtual1/2/2024 ![]() In 1995, study participant Chris Klock rode a virtual glass elevator up 49 floors, which has since been updated to look like this. And, her patient can take off and land as many times as needed during their hour-long session. For example, when she is treating someone for a fear of flying, she can determine when and if to introduce turbulence. She could also precisely control the environment and grade the exposure. Using VR meant that Rothbaum didn’t have to rely on her patients’ imaginations, or physically take them to the highest heights to face their phobias. Rothbaum and her collaborator, computer scientist Larry Hodges, were set on devising a virtual alternative to traditional exposure therapy, in which therapists help patients confront anxiety-inducing stimuli in real life or by simply visualizing triggers. At the time of Rothbaum’s study, the nascent technology was still primarily considered entertainment, and so the notion that it could have clinical utility was unexpected. The term “virtual reality” had been coined less than a decade prior in 1987 by computer scientist Jaron Lanier-although cinematographer Morton Heilig built the first immersive virtual experience, known as the "Sensorama,” back in 1960. The study, she explains, “presented VR in a whole new light.” “Our phones were ringing off the hook,” recalls Rothbaum, now the director of the Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program at Emory University School of Medicine and the Emory Healthcare Veterans Program. Post-treatment, Klock was able to ride a real glass elevator to the restaurant atop Atlanta’s Westin Peachtree Plaza, rather than trudging up 72 flights of stairs. The study was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, and the researchers found that those treated with VR reported reduced anxiety and avoidance of heights. Klock was one of 17 students to complete Rothbaum’s experiment, which was the first controlled study using virtual reality (VR) to treat a psychological disorder. ![]() He stared down from a 20-story balcony, traversed narrow bridges suspended above water, and ascended 49 floors in a glass elevator-all without leaving the therapy room run by clinical psychologist Barbara Rothbaum. Customers interested in using either method of doing business should learn about both their bank’s mobile banking app and online banking website to better manage their finances.A June 21, 1995, headline on page 11 of the New York Times read: “‘Virtual Reality’ Conquers Fear of Heights.” The article told the story of Chris Klock, a junior at Georgia Tech, who donned a head-mounted display once a week for seven weeks, and was transported to a 3-D environment simulating various altitudes. Mobile and online banking provides convenience to customers who want to manage their finances while on-the-go both options allow a person to conduct financial business from outside a banking facility. Last year, mobile banking apps were used on 52% of smartphones in the US, according to a consumer and mobile financial services report by the Federal Reserve.Īpps can offer a wide range of services that are not limited to account access and include the following: While more banks are making their sites easier to use on mobile devices, mobile banking is more commonly associated with accessing your accounts through an app. However, simply accessing the bank’s website on a mobile device is not the only method of mobile banking. Mobile banking allows you to perform many of the same activities as online banking using a smartphone or tablet instead of a desktop computer. ![]() In essence, a customer can do almost any activity online that he or she would be able to do in person when visiting a branch. Keynote speech meaning1/2/2024 ![]() "Oral" also is unusual for me (but maybe not in other fields). Maybe your professor was invited and passed the ball to you the best thing to do is asking him/her. Gorilla mind lock and load1/1/2024 ![]() Second, the monthly fee includes Bark's monitoring service, which is what you're really paying for here. First, the monthly fee includes the phone's retail price. While the plan is expensive when compared with the access-only plans from the carrier competition, there are some things to keep in mind. The Bark Phone is billed monthly as a service and does not require a contract. The cost of a basic line on a family plan from any of the big three wireless providers would run $30 to $45 per month in comparison and include far more data. If you want LTE 4G data for your child, you can pay $59 per month for 4GB, $69 per month for 8GB, or $89 for unlimited data (35GB at high speeds). Service plans start at $49 per month, which includes unlimited talk, text, and Wi-Fi access, but no mobile data. Instead, Bark Phone runs on Bark Wireless (an MVNO that likely relies on AT&T's network). You cannot add Bark to your existing AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon plan. The well-designed app and finely tuned default settings are a big help. Log in to the account you used to purchase the Bark Phone, follow the prompts, and complete the setup process by choosing a new phone number or an existing one (that you'll port over). After you open the package and charge the device, you need to scan the QR code that comes up on the welcome screen. Setting up the Bark Phone takes just a few minutes. The phone doesn't support rapid charging and a charging brick is not included in the box. In pure standby mode, the Bark Phone’s battery lasted 7 days and 7 hours. During testing, the battery lasted for 42 hours of continuous use. The 5,000mAh battery is impressive, but not quite head-turning. When listening to tunes or watching a show, my kids and I enjoyed the sound well enough, but wireless headphones or a Bluetooth speaker might improve the experience. The single speaker on the Bark Phone is surprisingly loud, but it's a shame the phone doesn’t support stereo playback. The case provides some protection, but I would suggest adding a better case and a tempered glass screen protector to promote longevity. Just like any other smartphone, though, kids can still break it or crack the screen if they don’t take care of it. The Gabb Phone Plus, another kids' phone, measures 5.80 by 2.74 by 0.3 inches and has a 5.83-inch screen.Ĭorning Gorilla Glass 5 helps prevent scratches and breaks, and the phone feels well made in general. An iPhone SE (2022), by way of comparison, measures 5.45 by 2.65 by 0.3 inches and weighs 5.09 ounces, but has a much smaller 4.7-inch screen. At 6.87 ounces, we can safely say at least it isn't too heavy. At 6.5 by 3.0 by 0.35 inches (HWD), the Bark Phone is taller and wider than many phones and may not be suited to the hands of younger children. Happily, the Bark Phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack so kids can plug in their favorite headphones. The power button and volume toggle are positioned on the right edge of the phone and it charges via a USB-C port on the bottom. The phone has an Exynos 850 processor, 3GB RAM, and 32GB of storage (expandable via microSD memory card). The screen measures 6.6 inches and has 2,408 by 1,080 pixels, for a density of 400ppi. The Samsung logo is plainly printed on the back under the case, and the phone identifies itself as the A13 in the settings menu. Physically speaking, the only real difference between the regular Galaxy A13 and the Bark Phone is that the latter comes with a matte black bumper case preinstalled. It’s a fully functional Samsung Galaxy A13 Android smartphone in black. The Bark Phone is not a toy and it doesn’t look like one. If you were to gift this phone to a child or teen, they wouldn’t notice that it's meant for kids at first glance. We encountered a few quirks in testing, but nothing significant enough to prevent the Bark Phone from earning our Editors' Choice award for kids' phones. The Bark Phone also tracks location, monitors screen time, and performs a number of other tasks that keep kids safe and give parents peace of mind. Bark claims to give parents “unprecedented” access to their kids' online activities, allowing them to see exactly who kids are talking to, what they're saying, and receive alerts when danger rears its head. It's a customized Samsung Galaxy A13 with Bark’s parent-approved software running the show. The Bark Phone (starting at $49 per month) is made by the same company that offers the Bark Premium and Bark Jr. ![]()
